Important tips for storing the milk

  • Store the milk in small glasses or plastic containers with a tight-fitting lid. The presence of one of the following marks on the bottom of some plastic containers indicates that they are safe to use.
  • Label the expressed milk with the date, time and the baby’s name.
  • Store milk in the back of the freezer or refrigerator, not the door.
  • Freeze milk in small amounts of 50 to 60 millimeters to avoid wasting any.
  • When freezing, do not fill the container fully; leave 1/3 at the top; breast milk expands as it freezes.
  • If you don’t plan to use refrigerated expressed milk within 3 days, freeze it right away.
  • Milk can be stored in a cooler with frozen ice packs for up to 24 hours when you are travelling.
