Engorgement

Engorgement is the inflammation of the breast which is different  from the normal fullness of the breast. Engorgement can make breastfeeding hard because baby cannot attach properly to the breast.

To relieve the breast engorgement

  • Gentle massage to soften the areola and surrounding tissue by moving it slightly backward and upward into the breast, once the areola has softened a little you can place the baby on the breastw.
  • Applying cold compresses to the breast may give you some comfort after feeding.
  • Try to relieve the engorgement by feeding frequently and expressing the milk.
  • You may want to take some pain relief like Paracetamol as the doctor ordered.
  • Please remember, more frequent feeds in the second 24 hours after birth can prevent engorgement.
